Mom I don’t want to read!” I am not good at it! Its’ so boring, a refrain for young children that are struggling and find it difficult to read. Why do these children find reading so difficult> Many times the schools having large class sizes and do not think outside the box. Many of the students that I teach just needed presented in a fun stimulating way. For instance for the young prek-3rd grade we play phonics baseball, where the child steps up to the plate is asked a question. It could be single which is the easiest double, triple or home run question. The students are fascinated by the game and are challenged to try a more difficult question. Not only is this an active game but it builds confidence in their ability to read and become fluent. Another game is called Body Boggle. It is an old game but still works well with young or older students. as they have to jump on the letters to spell a word, similar to twister. Instead of students memorizing words teach them to chunk the word families together. It no only helps them recognize patterns in words but also helps them become better spellers.

It is hard to develop lots of different ways to teach students how to read while keeping them engaged. Ideas like phonics baseball are great once students have developed the skills necessary to learn phonics. Teaching that first step to get students up to a reading ready level is more difficult. We’ve created board games and interactive software to keep students engaged and love hearing about other teacher’s ideas!
